ELECTION 2024
WAHAB RECALL
—TRIPPING OUT THE BOX—Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price isn’t the only East Bay elected official to receive a notice of intention to be recalled this month.
—State Sen. Aisha Wahab received a notice of intention on Aug. 11. The filing is a step before a recall campaign can begin seeking out registered voters to sign the recall petition.
—But, unlike the notice of intention filed on Aug. 15 by supporters of Price’s recall, the Wahab recall effort was rejected by California Secretary of State Shirley Weber earlier this week due to errors in their paperwork.
—The rejection is a bad look, an unforced error, but not debilitating to the recall campaign’s overall aim. Weber directed the group to redo the notice of intention to recall.
—The Committee to Support the Recall of Aisha Wahab raised $92,000, as of the most recent campaign finance period, ending on June 30.
—SB 403, the Wahab bill to ban caste-based discrimination in the state and the impetus for the recall campaign, could come up for a vote within the next few weeks.
—There are rumors the recall effort is simply an attempt by conservative Hindus in South County to create leverage that would lead Wahab to drop the bill.
—But what if SB 403 is approved by the Legislature, signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, and it further fuels the recall campaign?
