ALAMEDA CITY COUNCIL
—PAI OUT—Alameda City Council candidate Bill Pai announced on Thursday that he is suspending his campaign following a Aug. 24 arrest for domestic violence.
—“To all who have expressed their support, I apologize for disappointing you,” Pai wrote on the Alameda Post website this morning.
—Pai, a first-time and viable candidate for one of two at-large council seats this fall, maintained his innocence, but acknowledged the alleged incident has sidetracked his campaign.
—“However, when it comes to the campaign cycle the timing could not have been worse, so I am withdrawing,” Pai wrote.
—News of a police log containing Pai’s name, his street address, and the arrest for domestic violence, began trickling out on Alameda social media pages last weekend.
—Monday’s East Bay Insiders Newsletter reported on the incident, including a brief statement from Pai. “I am innocent and expect the charge will be fully dismissed soon,” he said earlier this week.
—He gave no indication on Monday that he was contemplating putting his campaign on hold.
