ELECTION 20222

ALAMEDA COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY

—BATTLE ROYALE—There have been highly contentious and negative campaigns in Alameda County over the past decade, but few have been as deeply personal as this year’s Alameda County District Attorney’s June Primary race. That level of disdain was in full relief last Saturday as three of the four candidates hoping to replace Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley unmercifully ripped each other apart as they sought the valuable endorsement of the Alameda County Democratic Party.

—The major combatants were again Alameda County Assistant DA Terry Wiley and civil rights attorney Pamela Price. The barrage of criticism and outright insults may have been a determining factor for Alameda County Democrats who ultimately offered no endorsement in the race on Saturday. The threshold for winning the endorsement is support from 60 percent of its voters.

—Price questioned Wiley integrity, suggested he committed a felony for his involvement in alleged electioneering as a public employee in 2018 that involved O’Malley’s re-election, and labeled him the status quo.

—Wiley suggested Price is too radical for the job and questioned whether she possess the requisite experience for running a large organization like the Alameda County DA’s Office.

—In an astonishing sequence, Wiley accused Price’s campaign of dirty politics involving a website and said Price told a group of county prosecutors during her ill-fated 2018 campaign for DA that ‘We’re going to fire all you motherfuckers.” Price’s desire to clear house at the DAs office has been reported before.

—It’s not unusual for candidates seeking a contested office to begin showing signs of crankiness toward each other. The four candidates that also include Jimmie Wilson and Seth Steward have participated in a large number of public forums and endorsement meetings over the past three months. The can probably recite each others stump speech verbatim. But Saturday’s fireworks were another level of angst.
