Alameda County Dems leadership shifts north; party names Berkeley’s Igor Tregub to lead party
—NEW LEADERSHIP—Berkeley’s Igor Tregub is the new leader of the Alameda County Democratic Central Committee. Tregub is a longtime grassroots leader for Berkeley tenants’ rights, activist in countywide politics, and also known for his environmental work with the Sierra Club.
—Tregub previously served as vice-chair and replaces Terry Sandoval, who passed away in late February. He was unanimously approved by the central committee on Wednesday night.
—“In the spirit of Bernie Sanders, this is not me/us. This is our central committee. This is our Democratic Party,” Tregub said. “I want this to work for all of us. I want this to be your central committee that we share ownership over.” He added, “Terry’s shoes are going to be very big to fill. I’m going to do my best.”
Tregub’s tenure begins at a difficult time for the Alameda County Democratic Party. A generational struggle between local establishment Democrats and young, so-called Berniecrats, or progressives, in recent years has turned the party’s attention away from fundraising and supporting local candidates…
