ALAMEDA COUNTY DEMOCRATS
—ISRAEL-GAZA RESOLUTION—The Alameda County Democratic Central Committee is preparing a strongly-worded resolution that calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Gaza War and accuses Israel of ethnic-cleansing of the Palestinian people.
—On Sunday, the local party’s resolutions committee included a highly spirited discussion about the possible resolution on the Middle East war.
—The debate required a second remote meeting on Tuesday night that, at times, included over 350 participants. A robust chat on Zoom reflected passions on both sides of the discussion. The chat function was later turned off by the party’s chairperson.
—Most forcefully advocated for a ceasefire, including some calling for much stronger language against Israel’s actions against Palestinians living in Gaza.
—Others called the resolution one-sided and failing to directly acknowledge attacks by Hamas against Israel.
—Here’s a few pertinent lines in the Alameda County Democratic Central Committee’s proposed resolution on the Israel-Gaza War authored by committee members Yoana Tchoukleva and Austin Tam:
WHEREAS, Alameda County Democratic Central Committee stands in solidarity with Palestinian people who are currently facing a campaign of collective punishment by the state of Israel: collective punishment is considered a war crime & refers to punishment imposed on a group of people in response to a crime committed by a member of the group; the state of Israel, according to its leaders, is engaging in collective punishment against the Palestinian people in Gaza in response to the horrendous attacks on Israel committed by Hamas on October 7, 2023.
WHEREAS, Israel is also committing ethnic cleansing by requiring two million Palestinians to leave Gaza immediately or risk being bombed, and then by bombing them as they flee to Southern Gaza; hundreds of Palestinians have also been killed or displaced in the West Bank.
Israel would not be able to maintain this apartheid regime without billions in military aid provided by the U.S. every year, thereby also depriving U.S. citizens of money for their own basic needs while forcing our communities to be complicit in crimes against humanity.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the ACDCC advocates for the dignity and safety of residents in every community, and thus calls for an immediate ceasefire, the entry of humanitarian assistance into Gaza, the release of the hostages held by Hamas and Israel, and an alliance of the United States, and other states in the United Nations to work with the parties to address the root causes of the conflict and develop a pathway to a peaceful lasting resolution.
—Tonight, the roughly 40 members of the Alameda County Democratic Central Committee will vote on the proposed resolution.
