Alameda IE vs. The World
Independent Expenditure Committees are beginning to form in advance of the stretch run to the November elections. Plus, campaign finance data for Friday.
ELECTION 2022
Days until Election Day: 74:
CAMPAIGN FINANCE
—IE ALERT—A new Independent Expenditure Committee in Alameda could have just named itself the “Committee in support of mayoral candidate Trish Herrera Spencer and council candidates Tony Daysog and Bill Pai and opposed to everyone else on Earth.” That’s a long name but get ready for this word salad:
—“A Better Alameda Supporting Spencer, Daysog & Pai for City Council, Opposing Ashcraft & Shaw for Mayor and Oddie, Groce, Jensen & Beusterien for City Council 2022,” received a $4,000 contribution on Thursday from Alameda resident Reyla Graber.
—Here’s hoping she made the donation online because the IE’s full name would never fit on the “pay to the order of” section of any check, except for the oversized one you get after winning the state lottery. By the way, the Shaw in the IE’s name is Alameda mayoral candidate Barack D. Obama Shaw.
—FIRE RESCUE—Sheng Thao’s Oakland mayoral campaign will be getting a boost this fall from a newly-formed Independent Expenditure Committee backed by the Oakland firefighters union. Paperwork for “Working Families for a Better Oakland supporting Sheng Thao for Oakland Mayor 2022” was filed with the Oakland city clerk’s office on Wednesday. The filing lists Oakland Firefighters Union President Zac Unger as the IE’s principal officer.
—Also keep an eye out for mailers and online ads from an IE backed by SEIU Local 1021 and IFPTE Local 21 in support of Oakland’s progressive business tax ballot measure. Expect the IE named “Yes on T-Invest In Our Oakland 2022” to spend heavily in support of Measure T.
—PROGRAM NOTE: As local government begins its return from the August Recess, and the fall election season heats up, the full East Bay Insiders Newsletter returns on Monday.
