CITY NEWS
ALAMEDA
—GONZALEZ SETTLEMENT—Alameda officials announced the city has settled a wrongful death lawsuit with the estate and son of Mario Gonzalez, who died in April 2021 after a struggle with Alameda police officers.
—The settlement with the estate and Gonzalez’s son is for $11 million, the city announced on Thursday. Additionally, the city settled with Gonzalez’s mother for $350,000.
—Gonzalez’s death near the South Shore Center in Alameda shocked the city, coming within a year of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis, and other high-profile police homicides in the Bay Area.
—Like Floyd, Gonzalez was pinned to the ground by the officers before later dying. Gonzalez’s death led to calls by the public for greater police accountability in Alameda.
—No charges, however, were brought by then-Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley against the three Alameda police officers.
—Current Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price reopened the case against the police officers earlier this year.
—The settlements will be paid through the California Joint Powers Risk Management Authority.
