BOARD OF SUPERVISORS - DISTRICT 5
—IE ATTACKS—The independent expenditure committee poised to go negative against Alameda County supervisorial candidate Nikki Fortunato Bas released its first hit on Monday.
—The effort by the IE, Supporting Bauters and Opposing Nikki Bas for Supervisor 2024, formerly known as Bauters for a Safer East Bay, is uneven.
—The attack website named, NoNikkiBas.com, calls her a “total failure,” and lays out Bas’ record on public safety, including her push to defund the Oakland Police in 2021, along with the fiscal management of the city.
—“Nikki ignored experts and commonsense because she has a political agenda that is putting all of us at risk,” the site declared.
—A 30-second ad included on the site, however, is much more tame, suggesting that internal polling indicates attacking a female candidate is unpopular. For instance, the omission of Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao from the ad is notable.
—Thao is a member of Bas’ inner circle and any visual linkage to the most unpopular elected official in the city, not to mention someone likely to be recalled from office next month, seems obvious.
