Alameda County Supervisors Nikki Fortunato Bas and Elisa Márquez, bookending President Trump, hope to blunt any federal moves against the county’s immigrant and refugee populations.

☕️MORNING BUZZ

—For the past three months, state and local leaders have been preparing for President Trump’s return to Washington.

—It’s unclear if any their ideas will sufficiently protect against the Trump administration pulling back altogether federal funding for a myriad of reasons, including reprisals to sanctuary cities.

—Alameda County could well be a target for Trump. Seven of the county’s 13 cities approved resolutions over the years declaring sanctuary city status for undocumented migrants. Two others are labeled as “compassionate cities.”

—On Tuesday morning, Alameda County Supervisor Nikki Fortunato Bas will present her plan to the Board of Supervisors for creating an ad hoc committee to “respond to anticipated federal policies and budgets that will impact vulnerable populations in Alameda County.”

—Bas envisions serving on the ad hoc committee, to be named “Alameda County Together For All,” with Supervisor Elisa Márquez.

—It is modeled on a similar ad hoc committee created in 2017 by former Alameda County Supervisors Wilma Chan and Richard Valle to support the county’s immigrant and refugee populations in the wake of Trump’s “Muslim ban.”

—Its first meeting is scheduled for Feb. 6.

—Among the deliverables expected from the ad hoc committee:

  • Coordinate with community and governmental agencies to protect “Alameda County communities and the programs that support them.”

  • Plans for protecting county health and social services.

  • Creating a fund to aid immigrants and refugees funded through philanthropy, local and state funding.

—More inside:

  • Loren Taylor says, get back to work!

  • Alameda County Dems may be rethinking plan to endorse more than one candidate in RCV races.

  • Four rounds of voting by the Board of Supervisors will decide who becomes the next DA this afternoon.

  • How much did Nikki Fortunato Bas spend to win last fall’s District 5 seat?

  • Supervisor David Haubert, the county’s top local fundraiser, is ready for 2028.
