BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
—RUSSELL CITY APOLOGY—Six decades ago, residents of Russell City repeatedly sought basic services and infrastructure from the Alameda County Board of Supervisors that other areas had long enjoyed.
—When Russell City was seized through eminent domain in the 1960s, many of the predominately African American and Latino residents received little compensation for their properties. Only when Russell City was cleared and annexed, was basic infrastructure built.
—On Tuesday, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors will formally apologize for their predecessor’s treatment of Russell City residents.
—“Be it resolved that this Board of Supervisors of the County of Alameda formally apologizes to the individuals, families, and descendants that endured and continue to experience the reverberations of the destruction of their unincorporated community of Russell City,” the resolution declares.
