CITY NEWS
UPROOTED IN OAKLAND
—EXTRA INNINGS—Monday was the day many Oakland A’s fans were dreading. It was the last day of Nevada’s 120-day legislative session for this year and the Las Vegas ballpark bill was still outstanding.
—But the midnight deadline came and went without SB 509, the legislation proposing at least $380 million in public funding for a ballpark on the Las Vegas Strip, making any legislative movement.
—Does that mean the A’s are saved? No. But Monday night’s development drew a huge sigh of relief from A’s fans.
—Time has been bought. Perhaps for Oakland city officials to redouble their efforts to keep the team in the East Bay, or more likely and cynically, give A’s ownership extra time to further screw up their efforts in Nevada, and who knows where else?.
—Nevada’s part-time Legislature, however, could be called back by the governor for a special session to take up the ballpark bill and other pressing legislation. But some media reports from the Silver State suggest interest in the A’s relocating to Las Vegas is not exactly trending in an upward fashion.
*UPDATE—Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo called for a special session at 1 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Democratic Assembly Speaker Steve Yeager, however, said the ballpark bill will not be taken up.
