ELECTION COMMISSION
—LAST-MINUTE CHANGES—With the November General Election less than three weeks away, Alameda County Registrar Tim Dupuis will provide a status update later today on the department’s progress toward policies and procedures for the release of cast vote records.
—The Alameda County Board of Supervisors directed Dupuis on Oct. 8 to release cast vote records for all races in Alameda County starting at the end of Election Night on Nov. 5, and each subsequent release of election updates.
—Cast vote records are digital representations of the vote that does not include personal information about the voter or how they voted.
—Proponents for releasing cast vote records on a consistent basis say extra eyes on the election allow third-party entities and residents to potentially spot irregular pattern in the vote.
—The bungling of ranked choice voting races two years ago in Oakland, Berkeley, and San Leandro led the registrar to unwittingly certify the wrong winner in an Oakland school board race.
—The error was discovered by a third-party, FairVote, a group that led the effort to bring the unique voting system to the East Bay in the early 2010s.
—Dupuis has long expressed resistance to releasing cast vote records prior to certification of the election.
—Earlier this month, he again voiced strong concerns about the quick turnaround required for creating a new policy and procedure for cast vote records during the stretch run of the election.
—Last week, just prior to the Board of Supervisors approving direction to release cast vote records on Election Night, Dupuis stopped the proceeding to alert the board of a text message he received notifying him that Dominion Voting Systems, the county’s election vendor, told his office they would not be able to assist them in the matter.
