ELECTION 2024
ALAMEDA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS - DISTRICT 4
—STOP! DON’T DO IT!—Jennifer Esteen’s campaign for Alameda County Board of Supervisors in District 4 almost committed a major unforced error last weekend.
—A flier going around for a few weeks detailed a fundraiser for Esteen’s campaign at the Ashland REACH Youth Center. No big deal, right?
—Wrong.
—The Ashland REACH Youth Center is a county-owned facility. Having campaign-related events here is verboten and a clear violation.
—The event was moved at the last minute.
—Esteen supporters gathered, instead, at Jack Holland Park in unincorporated Ashland on Sunday afternoon.
—If it had proceeded, the event would have been a potential talking point for her opponent, incumbent Supervisor Nate Miley, to portray Esteen as inexperienced in county government.
—In addition, the creation of the Ashland REACH Youth Center is high on the list of Miley’s biggest accomplishments since he was elected to the Board of Supervisors in 2000.
—Program note: We are now smack dab in the middle of the dreaded August recess, the annual mid-year respite for local government officials.
—But don’t worry. We have a truncated presidential primary cycle to draw upon for news and insights and county doings are not fully shut down.
—Personally, I’m going to use the next few weeks to experiment with some new features like, for example, short Q&As with next year’s candidates. Some of my ideas may work, some may not. Let’s figure it out together.
—In the meantime, thank you for your support and for giving me a few minutes of your time every weekday morning. —steve
