Don't provoke the monster
Oakland City Council is showing hesitation about raising the ire of Trump if they formally reaffirm their sanctuary city status
☕️MORNING BUZZ
—Seemingly every week there’s a day when the upheaval created by the Trump administration hits multiple levels of local government all at once. Yesterday was one of those days.
The Alameda County Board of Supervisors approved a modest allocation of one-time funding for legal and education services for immigrants and refugees potentially endangered by federal immigration agents.
The board’s funding is derived mostly from vacant positions budgeted for the current fiscal year.
None of these conversations are made without an expression of worry that the Trump administration may act punitively.
Alameda County Supervisor David Haubert was worried about inadvertently triggering a negative response from the federal government.
Last week in Oakland, a councilmember was met with some resistance to a proposed agenda item to reaffirm the city’s sanctuary city status. Three councilmembers expressed worries about challenging President Trump in any way.
To prove their point, words and phrases like “poking the eye” of the administration, “provoking the beast,” and “provoking the monster.” were used.
Meanwhile, the response by residents in the East Bay is shifting into protest mode.
Activists are planning to protest at a Tesla dealership in Dublin. Others plan to demonstrate at the now-closed federal women’s prison, also in Dublin. There are rumors the Trump administration is eyeing the federal facility to detain undocumented immigrants.
A wide-scale protest urging residents to simply not buy anything from corporations on Feb. 28 is being planned.
