—COUNCIL CLARITY—Dublin Councilmember Michael McCorriston was appointed acting mayor on Tuesday, removing uncertainty in this fall’s open mayoral election.
—Melissa Hernández resigned as Dublin mayor on Tuesday after an appointment to the BART Board of Directors on May 23.
—The remaining four Dublin councilmembers—two of whom are running for mayor in November—dealt with the potentially messy politics of appointing an acting mayor with uncommon aplomb and grace.
—The council could have left itself with four members until November with Vice Mayor Sherry Hu, a mayoral candidate, running the meetings or seek outside applicants for the seat.

—Instead, they settled on McCorriston, a first-term councilmember that is up for re-election in November.
—McCorriston made clear his plan for the fall. “I’m not running for mayor in this cycle,” he responded to a question from Councilmember Jean Josey, also a candidate for Dublin mayor in November.
—One determining factor was the realization that Josey and Councilmember Kasef Qaadri would have had to sacrifice the remaining two years of their council term if they accepted the role of acting mayor through the end of the year.
—McCorriston’s elevation to acting mayor leaves open his District 3 council seat. The Dublin City Council will address the vacancy at its next meeting. McCorriston is currently a candidate for District 3 in the fall.
