DUBLIN
—‘DUBLIN DEFENDER’ RESIGNS—Dublin Mayor Melissa Hernández will resign from office, effective Tuesday. Hernandez, who was nearing the end of her final term as mayor, was appointed to the BART Board of Directors on May 23.
—COUNTING TO THREE—The remaining four Dublin councilmembers, two of whom are running for mayor this November, will decide its options on Tuesday night for appointing an interim mayor.
—Dublin is a general law city, as opposed to most cities in Alameda County which operate under a charter. Dublin has no rules for how to replace a departing mayor other than the timing of an appointment and whether a special election could be called.
—Because of the timing of Hernández’s resignation and the close proximity to the opening of the July nomination period for candidates countywide to file for offices, a special election is costly and not practical.
—The Dublin City Council will likely attempt to choose one of their own to fill the vacancy. But getting to three votes to appoint may not be easy…
