SAN LEANDRO
—MORNING RAID—Eighteen FBI agents raided the home of San Leandro Councilmember Bryan Azevedo on Wednesday morning, according to local law enforcement sources.
—The FBI confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that “court authorized law enforcement activity” occurred today on Dillo Street in San Leandro. “We are unable to provide additional information at this time,” a spokesperson for the FBI said.
—It’s unclear what FBI agents were looking for, but Azevedo has ties to Andy Duong, the co-owner of California Waste Solutions, the Oakland recycling company whose home and business was raided by FBI agents on June 20.
—The Duongs were one of Azevedo’s top campaign contributors during his run for mayor in 2022. Azevedo was re-elected to a second term to the San Leandro City Council last November.
—Azevedo was among the large number of Port of Oakland and Oakland officials who traveled to Vietnam in July 2023 for a trade mission paid for by the Vietnamese American Business Association, a group backed by the Duongs, and also the subject of the FBI raids in June.
—In a letter to the editor in July, Azevedo denied involvement in the potential public corruption scandal in Oakland.
—“There have been a lot of rumors recently tying me to Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao's alleged corruption scandal and I want to set the record straight,” Azevedo wrote in the San Leandro Times.
—“I don't know anything about this alleged corruption nor do I believe that we should assume that corruption has happened until the facts come out.”
