CITY NEWS
HAYWARD
—HAYWARD HOT SEAT—Five applicants will be interviewed this evening for an appointment to the Hayward City Council. The appointee will serve the remaining two years of new Mayor Mark Salinas’ council term.
—Last week, the six serving Hayward councilmembers nominated five candidates out of 45 applicants. The list was whittled down to five candidates last Thursday.
—Two applicants received nominations from all six councilmembers—Hayward Planning Commissioners Ray Bonilla, Jr. and Daniel Goldstein.
—Three others received support from five councilmembers. They include Artavia Berry, a Hayward Community Services commissioner who has been outspoken about reconciling the city’s racist past; Austin Bruckner, an aide for Alameda County Supervisor Nate Miley; and Aidan Ali-Sullivan, also a member of the Hayward Planning Commission.
—Inside the nomination matrix: Four councilmembers supported the same five candidates. The majority voting bloc includes, Councilmembers Angela Andrews, Elisa Marquez, Julie Roche, and Francisco Zermeno. Salinas did not back Berry and Bruckner, while Councilmember George Syrop did not support Ali-Sullivan.
