Former Alameda County prosecutor is running for president
East Bay officials quickly coalesce around Kamala Harris; Recalls are successful in Sunol; Housing takes center-stage at Board of Supes; ALCO sheriff's deputies on TV; Who pulled papers on Friday?
—BIDEN DROPS OUT—In a breathtaking past 24 hours, Vice President Kamala Harris, a former Alameda County prosecutor and East Bay native, is now, in all likelihood, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president.
—President Biden’s decision to end his re-election campaign on Sunday, and the endorsement of Harris for president, led to a quick coalescing of Democratic support that built throughout the day.
—East Bay Rep. Eric Swalwell praised Biden on various cable news networks. “I fully support Kamala Harris and in fact she’s been trained by the best,” Swalwell said. “She’s tough, she’s real, she’s smart, and she’s got what it takes.”
—Rep. Ro Khanna, one of Biden’s most fervent supporters following the president’s debate missteps, also endorsed Harris.
—“Her trailblazing candidacy as the first African American woman and first Asian American will be a jolt of energy in our party,” Khanna said. “Our party can now run on a message of hope and a vision for the future.”
—The Democratic Party needs to unify behind Harris, Rep. Barbara Lee told KQED.
—California Attorney General Rob Bonta also endorsed Harris on Sunday. “With our democracy and rights at stake, no one is better prepared to defend our values and defeat Trump. I’m all in!”
—Igor Tregub, the chair of the Alameda County Democratic Party, thanked Biden for his service to the country and declared support for Harris.
—Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price, both women of color under threat of recalls this fall, were silent on Sunday, although Price’s campaign opposing the recall reposted Biden’s announcement.
