SAN LEANDRO
—GAZA RESO: ‘DRO—San Leandro students strongly called on the city council to vote on a resolution supporting a permanent ceasefire in the Israel-Gaza conflict on Monday night.
—After several hours of public testimony, the San Leandro City Council ultimately decided against placing a resolution on a future meeting agenda.
—Matching the emotions expressed by a large number of San Leandro students who argued unanimous support for a ceasefire resolution, Councilmember Celina Reynes said either way, “People who I love in San Leandro will be in pain and be experiencing trauma.”
—Reynes motioned for a resolution, which she planned to pen herself, that would acknowledge the Oct. 7 attacks on Israel and denounce the treatment of Gazans.
—However, after a round of comments by the council, it became clear that four of seven councilmembers did not support a resolution.
—No vote was taken (Reynes pulled the motion from consideration), but along with Reynes, only Councilmembers Victor Aguilar, Jr. and Bryan Azevedo supported a resolution.
