'I share your dismay'
Alameda County Registrar's languid vote-counting pace is drawing concerns. Dupuis promises a large batch of counted ballots later today; Election result updates from too close to call races
ELECTION 2024
—LIGHTING A FIRE—When the Alameda County Registrar of Voters office took a break the day after Election Night, it caused some grumblings. Indeed, processing the early tranche of votes on Election Night is stressful. The registrar’s office posted their last update just after 1 a.m.
—But when Wednesday’s respite led to a paltry 4,500 ballots being added to the tally on Thursday afternoon, the anger unleashed felt like an inflection point for those long frustrated by Alameda County Registrar Tim Dupuis’ performance over the past few election cycles.
—On social media, Alameda County’s abysmal progress toward counting votes was evident as opposed to other counties in the state, according to statewide tallies of the vote.
—Supervisor Keith Carson, who has grown concerned recently about Dupuis’ stewardship of the office, added his dismay on Thursday.
—“I know everyone is anxious and frustrated by the vote count process for Tuesday’s election in Alameda County,” Carson wrote to constituents.
—“Many have contacted my office to express their dismay/anger regarding the small number of votes that have been counted to date, while all of our surrounding counties are posting a greater number of results. I share your dismay.”
—The outcry apparently jumpstarted Dupuis. On Friday, his office processed 96,000 ballots, bringing the total to 333,000.
—In an email to the Board of Supervisors on Friday, Dupuis said 365,000 ballots remain uncounted in Alameda County.
—The registrar’s office planned to work through the weekend and Veteran’s Day today. Dupuis promised the Board of Supervisors another large chunk of processed ballots, scheduled for 5 p.m. today.
