Labor union again pours $550,000 into IEs supporting Wahab, Ortega-Toro
SoCal financier who once bought Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston’s mansion is bankrolling an IE backing Ignacio De La Fuente
ELECTION 2022
Days until Election Day: 61.
—IE ALERT—Early in the June primary, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 3299, made a splash by splitting a total of $1 million between Independent Expenditure Committees supporting Aisha Wahab in the 10th State Senate District and Liz Ortega-Toro in the 20th Assembly District.
—The early outlay may have set the tone for what was to become a historic influx of IE money in both East Bay primary races.
—Now, the same union, which represents U.C. Berkeley custodians, cooks, and groundskeepers, among other employee groups, is adding another $300,000 to the IE supporting Wahab this fall, and another $250,000 to the IE backing Ortega-Toro.
—Both IEs were mostly focused on large media buys. In particular, autobiographical television ads featuring both candidates.
—It’s unclear if the IE will use the same strategy this fall in a media landscape where many voters are already complaining about the unavoidable barrage of television commercials for the state gambling propositions.
—IDLF IE—With a month to go before vote-by-mail ballots are sent and two months before Election Day, this week was the moment when new IEs are rolling out of the showroom and older IEs are being dusted off for the drive to November.
—Check out today’s daily campaign finance data section below to see the increased IE activity over the past few days.
—AFSCME Local 3299’s IE reloaded this week, but a committee in support of Oakland mayoral candidate Ignacio De La Fuente was launched with $50,000 from Jon Brooks, the founder of JMB Capital, a Los Angeles-based investment firm.
—Brooks once made a splash in SoCal society pages when he purchased Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aston’s Beverley Hills mansion for $30 million. His connection to De La Fuente is not yet clear.
