Labor union is not down with FPPC
SEIU Local 1021 accepts large fine for failing to timely report $141,000 in late expenditures prior to the 2020 General Election
☕️MORNING BUZZ
—A years-long investigation by the California Fair Political Practices Commission found an independent expenditure committee backed by SEIU Local 1021 failed to disclose $141,818 in expenditures late in the November 2020 election cycle.
The FPPC is scheduled to finalize a $1,500 fine against SEIU Local 1021 and the IE's treasurer at a meeting this morning in Sacramento.
“California Workers' Justice Coalition,” the IE sponsored by SEIU Local 1021, was used to support a number of transportation ballot measures in the Bay Area, including several candidates running for transit offices.
In addition, mailers were sent in support of Measure W, Alameda County’s half-cent sales tax measure, Vinnie Bacon’s campaign for Alameda County supervisor, and Oakland Councilmember Dan Kalb’s re-election in 2020.
The IE was created on Oct. 5, 2020, less than a month before the Nov. 3, 2020 Election Day.
The undisclosed payments amounted to nearly half of the committee’s expenditures for the reporting period, according to the FPPC investigation. The missing expenditures were reported by the committee six days after Election Day.
The FPPC’s main concern was the unreported expenditures were made during the pre-election reporting period, thereby hindering the public’s ability to track the committee’s financial activity.
