Pamela Price’s deceptive play to dupe voters into believing Rob Bonta, San Francisco Chronicle support her Alameda County DA campaign
IE moves to oppose Generic Lone Republican candidate in SD10
ALAMEDA COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY
—DA DECEPTION—The San Francisco Chronicle endorsed Seth Steward to be the next Alameda County District Attorney in an editorial published on May 27. It’s a big accomplishment for a campaign that has impressed many East Bay politicos, but has struggled to get attention in this bruising primary for Alameda County DA.
—However, one of Steward’s opponents, Oakland civil rights attorney Pamela Price, wants voters to believe the newspaper endorsed her campaign, instead. At least, tweets like the one below more than suggests the Chronicle is backing her second bid for Alameda County DA.
—All the quotes in the tweet are legitimate. This is how the Chronicle introduced Price and her credentials in the editorial before adding, “Despite an impressive legal resume, however, Price has never worked as a prosecutor. And she likely won’t get much help overcoming any learning curves from inside the office. Alameda [County] prosecutors unionized in 2019, allegedly to prevent Price from cleaning house should she ever win office.”
—The Chronicle’s reasoning for not selecting Price—her lack of experience and rhetoric about firing some existing prosecutors—are the biggest shortcomings she will have to overcome in order to win a spot in an expected November runoff and winning the race.
—This isn’t even the first time this week that Price’s campaign has employed a strategy to dupe voters into thinking she has won an powerful endorsement. A digital ad floating around on Facebook and other social media spaces includes a recording from 2018 of then-Assemblymember Rob Bonta praising Price’s accomplishments in advance of the Alameda County DA primary that year. The recording is from a podcast I produced that featured Bonta as a guest. Click here for a version of the posting from last March.
—Bonta has not endorsed Price’s 2022 campaign for Alameda County DA. There was reportedly a falling out between the two in recent years. But it didn’t stop Price from emailing her supporters a photo earlier this year that also suggests Bonta is supporting her campaign. The photo is from 2017 when Bonta bestowed Price with the 18th Assembly District Women of the Year award.
