INAUGURATION DAY
—RESISTANCE UNITE—The State Legislature, at the behest of Gov. Gavin Newsom, convenes a special session this morning to begin planning for the state’s resistance to any of President-elect Donald Trump’s potential policies.
—But before that, three new state senators from the East Bay will be sworn in this morning.
—State Sen.-elects Jesse Arreguin (7th District-Berkeley), Tim Grayson (9th District-Concord), and Jerry McNerney (5th District-Tracy) will officially join the upper house of the state Legislature.
—They replace termed out state Sens. Nancy Skinner, Steve Glazer, and Susan Talamantes Eggman.
—SANCTUARY CITIES—Gov. Gavin Newsom is requesting that state lawmakers further fund California Attorney General Rob Bonta’s plans to block any legal challenges made by the incoming Trump administration.
—Among the potential challenges is the possibility that the Trump administration attempts to withhold federal funding from “sanctuary cities.”
—Alameda County could be greatly affected by such a move by the federal government.
—A majority of its 13 cities, including the county itself, designated themselves sanctuary cities early in Trump’s first administration.
—Union City declared a “compassionate city,” a nebulous term that falls short of the more controversial “sanctuary city” phrase.
