Price vs. Recall
Recallers soften their rhetoric, Price says large-scale turnover at DA's office is a myth; Demise of Alameda Hospital could come at the expense of plans to acquire St. Rose Hospital in Hayward
ELECTION 2024
PRICE RECALL
—PRICE VS. RECALLERS—Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price and the leaders of her recall made their argument at the City of Alameda Democratic Club on Wednesday night, although the respective camps did not meet face-to-face.
—Leaders from Save Alameda For Everyone (SAFE) argued that Price’s reforms, while laudable, have gone too far.
—Price said the recall campaign is about sour grapes following her victory in November 2022, and an assault on democracy.
—Price had good intentions, said Chris Moore, SAFE’s campaign manager, such as reducing an over reliance on criminal enhancements. “We agree. That’s important to the community. But these particular directives, they’ve gone too far.”
—Brenda Grisham, one of the leaders of SAFE, added, “We never said we want everyone locked away. We just want them to be held accountable for the crime that they’re doing, and there’s a lot of violent criminals on the street.”
—Grisham reiterated that Price’s directives for non-carceral criminal justice has gone too far.
—“What she said she was going to do was disrupt the judicial system and that’s what she’s doing,” Grisham said. “She didn’t say which way she was going to disrupt it.”
—After the recall leaders presented their case for roughly 20 minutes, Price joined the Zoom meeting to separately offer her rebuttal. Price and the recall leaders never interacted with each other.
—“It’s not about our policies,” Price said. “It really is an attack on our democracy.”
—She added, “The people decided that the criminal justice system was broken enough that we needed to have change.”
—The group behind the recall wants to remove her from office, but they don’t have a plan going forward, Price asserted. “It’s just based on a feeling they didn’t win in 2022.”
—If Alameda County voters decide to recall Price this November, the next steps are clear.
—Under the county charter rules amended by voters in March, the Board of Supervisors would appoint Price’s successor. The appointee would serve until the 2026 election cycle.
