Price's point
Resentencing of death penalty cases fits Price's reform narrative; Berkeley mayoral candidate tops $147k in public financing; Fremont mayoral candidate files FPPC complaint against his opponent

DISTRICT ATTORNEY
—PRICE’S POINT—The ACLU of Northern California will call for the resentencing of death penalty cases in Alameda County at a rally in Oakland this morning.
—The rally is a response to the discovery by Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price’s office of evidence that prosecutors in her predecessor’s offices sought to exclude African Americans and Jewish residents from serving on juries that included death penalty charges.
—Price’s office has identified 35 capital cases that could be subject to resentencing.
—The discovery of notes written by prosecutors in the death penalty cases present a glimmer of hope that Price could avoid being recalled by voters this November.
—The issue fits neatly into Price’s narrative that the actions of previous Alameda County DAs, especially former DA Nancy O’Malley, necessitated the types of wholesale criminal justice reforms she offered voters in 2022.
BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
—ATTEMPT #4—The Alameda County Board of Supervisors will make a fourth attempt at merely discussing a proposed ordinance to create a sheriff’s oversight board and office of inspector general on Tuesday afternoon.
—County supervisors postponed a discussion and possible vote on the long-awaited items on April 2, April 30, and June 4.
—RECALL COSTS—The cost of the Sunol school board special recall election will be between $15,808 and $17,472, according to the Alameda County Registrar of Voters.
—The price tag is based on stand-alone special election costs of between $19 and $21 per voter, set by the registrar of voters office. (As an aside, the per voter cost consolidated election in Alameda County cities this November is about $4.)
—The recall election for Sunol school boardmembers Ryan Jergensen and Linda Hurley is set for July 2.
—Vote-by-mail ballots have already been sent to the Sunol Unified School District’s 832 registered voters.
