☕️MORNING BUZZ

—Freshman East Bay Rep. Lateefah Simon wants to impeach President Trump, but the votes are not there yet, she told a capacity crowd at Alameda City Hall on Friday.

“I’ll tell you right now, I’m very much in favor of impeaching the president,” Simon told the older, mostly white audience.

“It’s going to be a long four years, unless we can impeach,”

Trump has masterfully sowed what Simon called, “crazy and chaos,” but added, “Evil won’t prevail for much longer.”

“I think the story is clear: We need a new president.”

—Despite Trump’s expansion of presidential power, assaults on the rule of law, and his handling of the economy, the Democratic Party appears hesitant to go down the impeachment rabbit hole for a third time.

The previous two attempts appeared to greatly embolden Trump and energized his supporters in the 2024 presidential election.

But it does little harm to a progressive Democrat in one of the bluest congressional districts in the country. Simon’s forceful call for impeachment was one of the biggest applause lines of her roughly one-hour town hall.

Simon believes Midwestern farmers who typically back conservatives are beginning to see the adverse effects of the Trump administration’s fiscal policy. “I think folks are going to rise up. We’re seeing it everyday,” she said.

House Speaker Mike Johnson knows this, Simon said. “He knows Republicans can’t go home because folks are pissed at them.”

Republican congressmembers are being called into the speakers office and returning to the House floor to vote against the interests of their constituents,” Simon added.

“I believe these folks are fearful, not only of their seats, but they are fearful for their own lives. This is how sinister the administration has become.”
