Hayward school trustee appears to suffer health emergency after contentious board meeting; Field is set in marquee CA14 primary; New poll shows Swalwell surging, other poll says otherwise

—Peter Bufete, a trustee on the Hayward Unified School District board, appeared to suffer a health emergency near the end of an extremely contentious meeting two weeks ago.
Parents and student advocates directed sharp and sometimes personal criticism at the board during the meeting while opposing the planned closure of Faith Ringgold School of Arts and Science.
More than six hours into the meeting, and shortly after the vote, Bufete’s speech became slurred and difficult to understand, prompting fellow trustees to come to his aid.
The board then went into recess, and Bufete did not return. His absence was not addressed that night.
Bufete also did not attend Wednesday’s board meeting. The trustee presiding over the meeting instead read a statement from him.
The statement did not mention his absence, but outlined guidelines for handling individuals who intentionally disrupt meetings and the legal grounds for removing them.
Trustee Ken Rawdon ended last night’s meeting by wishing Bufete a speedy recovery. “We miss him,” he said.
