Supervisor Haubert wants to end Alameda County's eviction moratorium
Oakland councilmember did not take kindly to attacks on her father's legacy; Why Alameda's progressive movement is in trouble
COUNTY NEWS
—MORATORIUM’S LAST DAYS?—Alameda County Supervisor David Haubert will ask his colleagues next Tuesday to consider ending the county’s eviction moratorium. The ordinance has been in effect since the early months of the pandemic.
—Haubert is requesting the Board of Supervisors accept his referral to schedule a discussion for rescinding or modifying the eviction moratorium at a future meeting, according to a memo to his fellow supervisors.
—Alameda County landlords have repeatedly voiced anger toward the extended eviction moratorium. In addition, the county has doled out at a snail’s pace millions in federal pandemic relief funds earmarked to pay landlords back for lost rental income. This has also caused great consternation among local landlords.
—Haubert, who took office in January 2021, believes prior reasons for enacting and later amending the eviction moratorium no longer exist. “Many of the conditions that were in place at the time this Board approved the Eviction Moratorium Ordinance are no longer in place as of today,” Haubert wrote.
—“We have a right to represent all of our constituents, I feel it is the right thing to do, to have a discussion to review and modify this Ordinance, that has had some unintended consequences on our constituents.”
—Earlier this week, Haubert agreed with Supervisor Nate Miley in saying the time has come to end the eviction moratorium. However, it’s not clear whether Haubert and Miley have a third vote to make it happen.
