There's a new sheriff in town: Yesenia Sanchez completes a historic upset of Sheriff Greg Ahern
Alysse Castro is the new Alameda County Superintendent of Schools; Alameda's Measure B passes
ELECTION 2022
—RESULTS UPDATE—In one of the most shocking upsets in Alameda County electoral history, Yesenia Sanchez has upended the long-standing countywide status quo with an outright victory over incumbent Sheriff Greg Ahern.
—With nearly all of the votes counted after today’s update of the June 7 election results, Sanchez defied prognosticators who viewed a November runoff against Ahern as her best-case scenario, with a rousing victory. There will be no runoff in November. There will be no Ahern in the sheriff’s office after this December.
—Sanchez earned more than 52 percent of the vote, which is enough to avoid a November rematch with Ahern. The result was unthinkable even just weeks ago and my be a signal to other aging Alameda County elected officials that they are in the midst of a changing of the guard in county politics.
—ANOTHER UPSET—Alysse Castro also reorganized county government after upsetting incumbent Alameda County Superintendent of Schools L.K. Monroe. Backed by labor, Castro provided another rare rebuke of an incumbent Alameda County official.
—After narrowly trailing Monroe after early returns were released a week ago, Castro stormed back to defeat Monroe by more than four points, 52.89 percent to 47.11 percent.
—PASSAGE SECURED—Alameda’s Measure B, a $298 million school facilities bond, narrowly survived a scare, notching the 55 percent threshold for passage with 55.86 percent of the vote. Measure B had been underwater for most of the week before trending upward over the past few days.
