—THIRSTY? BRING YOUR OWN CUP—Oakland is looking at legislation to require the use of reusable cups, plates, and utensils for in-dining customers at all food establishments, including farmers’ markets and food trucks.
—It also requires the same establishments to only provide single-use utensils when asked by the customer.
—The ordinance authored by Councilmembers Dan Kalb and Noel Gallo would also prohibit the city from purchasing or selling “single-use packaged water.” That not only includes bottled water in plastic containers, but also aluminum bottles and cartons.
—Obviously, the latter provision might be problematic in the event of a natural disaster, such as an earthquake.
—The proposed ordinance will be heard at today’s Oakland City Council Public Works and Transportation Committee meeting.
—A memo describing the benefits of the reusable foodware ordinance estimates Oakland food establishments will save $7,515 in annual costs, in addition to reducing the amount of waste.
