PRICE RECALL
—IF YOU CAN’T BEAT ‘EM…—Embattled Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price has long pegged MAGA Republicans as the driver for the “undemocratic” recall campaign against her.
—That didn’t stop Price from appearing at an event last weekend in which she was honored by the Multi-Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame, along with Romesh Japra, a fervent supporter of President Trump, who is also one of the leaders of the on-again, off-again recall of progressive state Sen. Aisha Wahab.
—Price was named District Attorney of the Year by the group last weekend in Oakland. Japra was honored with a Community Advocate and Leadership award.
—It’s unclear if Price was aware of Japra’s clear link to Trump supporters and conservative Hindu nationalists.
—She wouldn’t be the first to unknowingly find herself hobnobbing with opponents.
—Last month, Rep. Barbara Lee’s office scheduled a community meeting with the leader of Price’s recall, Chinatown Chamber of Commerce president Carl Chan. The event was quickly canceled. Lee’s office said the reason was Covid
—Japra, a wealthy Fremont cardiologist, has long been a presence in south county politics, although his belief system has somewhat evolved over the years.
—Japra was a big backer of Rep. Ro Khanna’s unsuccessful first run for Congress in 2014. Khanna, though, had positioned himself as a Silcon Valley business-friendly Democrat.
—When Khanna recast himself as a Bernie Sanders-type progressive, Japra forsaken him, and revealed the conservative, Hindu nationalist ideology that has made him a leader not only for Republicans, but, notably, South Bay progressives.
—Assemblymembers Alex Lee and Evan Low bowed down to Japra earlier this year, acknowledging while his politics did not mesh with theirs, his connections to the rising Indian American political class and wealthy could come in handy down the line.
