PRICE RECALL
—NUMBERS GAME—The petition to recall Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price was approved for circulation by the county registrar of voters on Thursday, the group behind the recall announced.
—Here’s what you need to know:
Save Alameda For Everyone (SAFE) needs to collect 73,193 valid signatures to qualify for the November 2024 ballot.
In reality, SAFE must gather up to 100,000 total signatures from Alameda County voters in order to account for signatures that cannot be verified, such as unregistered voters.
SAFE needs to accomplish this in 160 days, which means the deadline will be on or around the Mar. 5 primary election.
It’s expected that SAFE will employ paid signature-gatherers to get the job done. This is a costly endeavor.
It’s unknown at this time how much money SAFE or the secondary committee supporting them named “Reviving the Bay Area” has raised.
But financing the recall will not be difficult for these two groups, which have ties to local business and real estate interests.
Similarly, the financial prowess of “Protect the Win for Public Safety,” the committee opposing the recall, is also unknown at this moment.
Most insiders agree that a large number of recall signatures can be had in the Tri-Valley and Fremont areas, but not enough alone.
Oakland, a traditional Price stronghold, is the key. This is where the largest chunk of voters reside, but also the place perceived to be most impacted by rising crime, and by extension, potentially agreeable towards signing the petition.
