OAKLAND
—STATE OF THE CITY—The chair of the Oakland City Council Finance and Management Committee canceled Tuesday morning’s eagerly anticipated special meeting to discuss the Coliseum deal and details about a potentially devastating contingency budget plan.
—The early morning move by Councilmember Kevin Jenkins only exacerbated growing anxiety about Oakland’s financial solvency, while providing a slate of insurgent candidates another example of instability at City Hall.
—The cancelation of the finance meeting was the second time in a week that three Oakland councilmembers were denied the ability to receive information about the status of the Coliseum deal, along with the extent of the contingency budget plan that includes a massive cut to the number of police officers on the streets.
—The move also overshadowed Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao’s State of the City address on Tuesday afternoon, potentially her final major address prior to the Nov. 5 recall vote.
—Thao highlighted the hiring of a new police chief since her last State of the City address, in addition to reimplementation of the gun violence reduction program known as Ceasefire.
—“I can tell you today that crime is down,” Thao said, although the city’s police union vehemently disagreed with the assertion, in a statement on Tuesday evening.
—Thao noted that cuts to the police force may be needed, but offered, “I will always look for a better solution.”
—Thao made no mention of the recall campaign threatening her administration. Instead, she made several references to goals she intends to achieve over the next two years.
—She ended the speech by urging those seated in the council chambers to a call-and-response: “When we fight! We win.”
—In what may have ultimately been her farewell to the city, Thao said, “Thank you, Oakland. I love you.”
