THAO RECALL
—RECALL IS LIKELY—A poll released in early August showed Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao’s unpopularity at shocking high levels. With less than two weeks until Election Day, Oakland voters are still not impressed.
—The Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce presented its annual poll on Wednesday, showing Thao will likely be recalled from office on Nov. 5.
—The poll revealed that 56 percent of voters “definitely” support the recall, while those “definitely” against the recall was at 23 percent.. Those who “probably” or “lean yes,” raises the number supporting the recall to 64 percent.
—The displeasure with Thao is oddly a unifying force among disparate groups in Oakland. Sixty-four percent of both men and women both support the recall. Every age bracket supports the recall, although the 18-to-49 year-old demographic is the lowest at 58 percent.
—Liberals, moderates, and conservatives strongly support the recall. The only sub-group in the entire poll to oppose the recall, according to the poll is those who identify as progressive.
—Every racial and ethnic group overwhelmingly supports the recall, with African American voters being the most supportive at 70 percent. (Caucasians are the least supportive at 59 percent.
—Among Oakland’s seven council districts, the recall’s most supportive voters live in Districts 6 and 7, which includes East Oakland.
—In addition, 63 percent of those surveyed labeled Thao’s job performance as poor. Nine percent said she’s doing an excellent or good job.
—Thao’s favorability is significantly underwater at -57 points. Sixteen percent find Thao favorable, while 73 percent described her as unfavorable. A poll conducted two months ago by placed the favorability number at -52.
